AVFILM POPS UP WITH THREE AUTUMN FILM EVENTS IN THE NORTH BAY

The fall screening season kicks off with NOSFERATU with live accompaniment, BEETLEJUICE at the drive-in, and Bay Area Environmental Shorts Showcase at Barndiva.

Healdsburg, Calif. (October 17, 2022) – AVFilm has a packed calendar of events in the coming weeks, ushering in autumn with festive screenings in Healdsburg and Cloverdale ranging from free to fancy.

With Halloween right around the corner, October 27 is the perfect time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of silent classic NOSFERATU (dir. F.W. Murnau) at the Raven Performing Arts Center with live accompaniment by acclaimed concert pianist Frederick Hodges.

Those who can’t get enough of the spooky season can head to Cloverdale Citrus Fair on October 28 for a free drive-in screening of 1980s favorite BEETLEJUICE (dir. Tim Burton).

Then, on November 1, seven Bay Area filmmakers will be at Barndiva for a Bay Area Environmental Shorts Showcase. This 90-minute program will feature seven short films and a conversation with filmmakers.

These screenings also kick off the first AVFilm programs by Mike Traina, the organization’s new director of programming. Traina comes with more than three decades of experience running film festivals across California. In addition to his role with AVFilm, Traina continues to teach Film & Media Studies at Santa Rosa Junior College and curates Film Fest Petaluma.

“I’m really excited to join the AVFilm team,” says Traina. “The organization’s vision of using cinema to bring the community together and foster dialogue between local residents, industry professionals, and film students is truly inspiring. I’m eager to become better acquainted with the communities in Northern Sonoma County and look forward to engaging with filmgoers at our upcoming programs.”

More details on each event is below:

Thursday, October 27 at 7:00pm – NOSFERATU with live accompaniment

The 1922 silent horror classic NOSFERATU plays at the Raven Performing Arts Center. One hundred years may sound old for a film, but it’s young for a vampire! Max Schreck as the vampire Orlock continues to haunt audiences. Adding to the thrills is live piano accompaniment by Frederick Hodges, one of the most esteemed concert pianists in the Bay Area. Hodges strives for complete authenticity when creating silent film scores and says that live accompaniment is one of his most cherished musical pleasures.

Tickets are $15 general admission and $5 for students at https://avfilmpresents.org/events/nosferatu/

Friday, October 28 at 6:30pm – BEETLEJUICE at the Drive-In

The AVFilm Summer Series comes to a close with BEETLEJUICE at the Drive-In at the Citrus Fair Fairgrounds. For the first time, this popular series has been 100% free to attend, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Karma Dog Construction and Reuser Inc. Gates open at 5:30, with the entertainment beginning at 6:30, just after sunset. Before BEETLEJUICE, a short selection of student films will be shown. These works were created by middle schoolers in AVFilm’s Future Filmmakers 2022 summer camp at La Luz. Concessions will be available for purchase.

No tickets needed – parking is first-come, first serve.

Tuesday, November 1 at 6:00pm – Bay Area Environmental Shorts Showcase with food & wine at Barndiva

In an effort to promote better stewardship of our own backyard and acknowledge the impacts of climate change and urban growth, Traina curated an impressive collection of seven documentary shorts focused on keeping local plant, animal, insect, and sea life in balance.

All of the filmmakers will be in attendance to discuss the inspiration behind their films and the extraordinary efforts activists are engaged in to preserve a healthy North Bay ecosystem. The program is a partnership with Healdsburg Climate Action and is presented in collaboration with the Sebastopol Documentary Film Fest, Petaluma Film Alliance, and Green Film Festival of San Francisco.

Doors are at 6:00pm and the films will begin at 6:30pm in Studio Barndiva. Tickets are $30. https://avfilmpresents.org/events/bay-area-environmental-shorts/
