Directed by Jeff Adachi and Chihiro Wimbush

When a young woman is shot by an undocumented immigrant on Pier 14 in San Francisco during the summer of 2015, the incident ignites a political and media firestorm that reverberates through the 2016 presidential campaign. Plagued by misinformation, politicians and national media outlets misrepresent the facts of the case, distorting the public’s understanding of the event as well as the meaning of sanctuary cities. In the eye of this storm, two public defenders fight to reveal the truth. With unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to the defense teams’ approach to managing the case, Adachi and Wimbush craft a riveting and highly illuminating documentary that peels back the layers of stereotypes, jingoism, and scapegoating to reveal the challenge of providing an adequate public defense in a country awash in misinformation.

Director Chihiro Wimbush, Public Defender Matt Gonzalez, and Public Defender Francisco Ugarte are expected to be in attendance.
