AVFilm’s Full Circle Cinema program offers media literacy and video production skills training for schools. With this program, teachers can integrate media arts education into core classes to leverage existing curricula or take advantage of standalone classes designed to enhance class projects.

New Pilot Program For 2021–2022
With partnership and funding from the CARE Foundation, Educator and filmmaker Califa Witsch and Cloverdale High School English Teacher Joe Dobbins co-created a year-long intensive of integrated filmmaking training for Joe’s 12th-grade honors English Class. Students will receive in-class instruction from Califa to help build their own documentary as part of a class project on “truth.” Califa will visit Joe’s class three-four times per semester for the 2021-2022 school year, coaching and mentoring students alongside Joe.
A former AVFilm Board Member, Joe has many decades of teaching experience. He has also worked with AVFilm staff since 2015 to find ways of supporting Cloverdale USD and other small Sonoma County districts with media arts instruction. In collaboration with the Sonoma County Office of Education, AVFilm has worked to integrate video and filmmaking into core classes as a method of demonstrating learning. AVFilm is proud to fund this exciting new program.

Media Arts Education fosters self-directed learning and ultimately, the full range of 21st-century skills. Students are prepared to be effective communicators, creative problem-solvers, collaborators and lifelong learners, as well as for college and career. (Center for Media Literacy)
As part of Career Technical Education (CTE), standards for Career Ready Practice describe the fundamental knowledge and skills that students need to prepare for the transition to postsecondary education, career training, or the workforce. These include the ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and with reason and the ability to apply technology to enhance productivity. (California Department of Education)
Many public schools in Northern Sonoma County – as well as rural districts across the country – do not offer digital media classes. Student populations are too small to warrant the addition of another elective of this type, or students are not able to elect these classes and fulfill their primary educational requirements. AVFilm fills the gap!
